Community Garden “The farmer went out to sow seed….” It begins with a seed. And with nourishment, tender care, and a safe, healthy place to live – the seed grows into a bounteous harvest. Central Christian Church is planting a seed to have a community garden. A community garden is a place – individuals or families of all types come together to plant flowers and vegetables for many purposes: to enjoy the hobby, to feed the family, to feed others who might have less or none at all. This is a dream at this point. This year we are truly starting small – our garden is only about 5 feet by 10 feet. But it is a start and a seed that someday may become something bigger and grandeur. This first year, we thought it would be most appropriate to include the students of the Small World Preschool. We’ve kept it simple. They’ve been invited to help us plant a few pumpkin seeds (on the terrace beyond the playground). We have also planted a few cherry tomato plants. We’ve shared with them a bit about gardening. Just enough….to plant a seed. We are giving each of them their own cherry tomato plant. At home, they can plant and care for their own tomato plant. With their families they can learn about gardening: …how seeds become plants. …how this is part of the caring for the resources of our planet. By so doing, perhaps they will discover some important lessons about our world: ....how this seed can be used for good – to care for the planet, to feed their own family and to feed others who might not have enough or any. Join us at Central in planting a seed for a vision of a community garden. In years to come the garden at Central grow larger and larger. Most importantly, as these children care for a seed and plant this summer, we pray and hope – other seeds too, are being planted. These too, will grow larger and larger – as they garden or teach others to garden – as they feed their families – and as they use their seeds to feed and care for others. Isn’t that what a garden is all about? Blessings, The Gardeners of Central Christian Church “….Some people are like seed along the path….” Mark 4:3, 15
How is the Garden Growing?
Below are some photographs of our garden. Watch it grow from just a seed to the harvest of the crop(s). It will be updated every couple of weeks to provide a pictorial chronology of the Central Community Garden growing.
